Laasya, an Indian classical dance competition, began when Boston University's Dheem and MIT’s Natya decided it was time to showcase classical talent nationally.
In addition to establishing the first American intercollegiate dance competition for classical dance, BU Dheem and MIT Natya created the foundation for what has become a large network for individuals with a passion for dance. UMD Moksha, the winners of the first competition, went on to host the second Laasya, held on February 26th, 2011.
At this event, Pitt’s Nrityamala, in its first competing year, walked out with the gold. Part of the prize was to host the competition the following year.
Taking up the large responsibility with alacrity, the team is honored and excited to host the third annual Laasya competition on the Pitt campus in February 2012! Pittsburgh is filled with Indian classical talent, and the enthusiastic community will surely assist in making this a memorable event.

Nitin Madhav, originally from Pittsburgh, has made a life for himself in Washington, DC, through a series of international misadventures. He currently works at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on programs in Burma, China and Laos. Previously, he worked in Pakistan and Afghanistan -- before anyone had even heard of the Taliban. Soon after the fall of the Taliban, Mr. Madhav led an emergency back-to-school program for Afghan children denied education under that regime. His 2,000 person team printed and distributed 10.5 million textbooks across Afghanistan by airplane, truck, and donkey cart in time for the March 2002 opening of schools, for which he received White House recognition.
He has masters degrees in Public Health and in Economic and Social Development from the University of Pittsburgh. He has worked across Africa and Asia with experience ranging from Madagascar,
Ethiopia and Rwanda to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Thailand and Cambodia, with plenty of hair-raising adventures along the way – including dodging bullets and bombs, evading marauding mobs, and flying in Soviet-built planes held together with duct tape.
A lifelong student of the Indian classical arts, he is currently studying Khyal and Dhrupad, two classical north Indian musical traditions, and collects antique Indian musical instruments. His previous dance experience was limited to a bhangra performed at the French Embassy in Washington, where he accidentally knocked into the Ambassador, while performing a twirl.

The proceeds from Laasya 2012 will be donated to Unite For Sight. Unite for Sight supports eye clinics worldwide by investing human and financial resources in their social ventures to eliminate patient barriers to eye care.
Unite For Sight applies best practices in eye care, public health, volunteerism, and social entrepreneurship to achieve our goal of high quality eye care for all. The programs are locally led and managed by ophthalmologists at Unite For Sight's partner eye clinics. Unite For Sight's international eye care services with partner local eye clinics are comprehensive, including examinations by local eye doctors, diagnosis and care for all treatable conditions, education, and prevention. This full range of services is delivered to the population year-round.
Outreach services are brought to the people in their villages, in some cases including villages seven or more hours from the clinic. These patients are provided with follow up care by our outreach teams regularly throughout the year. To date, we have provided eye care services to more than 1,200,000 people worldwide, including more than 44,000 sight-restoring surgeries. Visit their website
